Jimmy Symonds
Stealing Beauty: The Magic in the Everyday
4 - 27 September 2003
Tuesday to Friday 10 - 5
Saturday 12 - 5
This exhibition explores the way in which photography can reveal
the magic and beauty in the usually unnoticed, secret world around
us, and as such presents a particular vision and attitude to life.
Jimmy Symonds uses different materials to create his photographic
works. Some are embossed onto watercolour paper others are mounted
onto polished perspex and set onto steel bases. They possess a
stark, minimal quality inspired by his fascination with geometric,
architectural shapes which he uses to create a feeling of quiet
contemplation and inner stillness.
His subjects range from strands of seaweed on the Outer Hebrides
to the concrete suburbs of a Czech town.
To the viewer, all of his images appear to float, delicately suspended,
reflecting and revealing the beauty in everyday people and objects.
