Toni Davey
Artists have often been concerned with conveying the illusion of three dimensions onto a two dimensional surface. Toni explores this transition through very controlled drawing or by physically reinventing the surface. In the work the underlying structure of the grid is always present. The grid offers the means to retrace one’s footsteps, to understand the journey and to allow forms to follow a rule or sequence of change. All the cut pieces have been made from a single sheet of paper with nothing added or taken away.
Toni Davey studied Fine Art at Hornsey College of Art (BA Hons) and Sculpture at Chelsea College of Art (MA). She worked in London as an artist and visiting lecturer while gaining experience as an architectural model maker: this had a profound effect on her thinking about sculpture expecially in relation to scale and the use of materials.
In 2010 she was commissioned by the architects Stanton Williams to produce a nine-metre drawing on glass for their award winning Wiltshire Council offices in Salisbury. This year her work has been selected for the Jerwood Drawing Prize and the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition.
