Eilis O'Connell
The Irish Sculptor Eilis O’Connell is renowned for her large scale commissioned pieces. Since 1979 she has created over 30 notable, permanent site-specific projects in the UK and mainland Europe, yet her small sculptures have rarely been seen. This show focuses on the extraordinary cumulative strength of O’Connell’s small-scale works and examines how form is developed within her studio practice. Mostly cast in bronze, a few in resin, the pieces are either maquettes, later to be enlarged, or stand-alone pieces, complete in their existing scale. Yet across the range of this beautifully formed work a fascinating balance is to be found between different registers: surface and shape; geometry and the organic; darkness and light.
