As with his previous exhibitions, much of Birkin Haward’s fourth solo show with the Beardsmore Gallery is a reflection of his recent travels, principally to Japan, Poland, Jordan and the Caribbean. However there is also work that will be familiar to those who recall earlier exhibitions namely subjects based on the North Norfolk coast and industrial sites where his interest in unusual and often unexpected man-made structures in the landscape continues to hold a fascination for him.
To begin with I had been working largely in black and white. I found I was mainly interested in light and atmosphere and the extent to which a medium such as charcoal could capture that. Later, I started looking for the underlying abstract quality of what was around – either in linear terms or in mass. This coincided with a return to colour used in a rather flat way since I became less preoccupied with atmosphere and more interested in the often surprising conjunction of man-made objects of all sorts with the landscape.
Birkin Haward was born in Ipswich into a family where drawing and painting were regular activities. A practising architect for most of his life, he trained at the Architectural Association, worked for many years with Norman Foster and in 1983 formed a partnership with Joanna van Heyningen, engaged mainly on cultural, heritage and education projects.
